Special Cover – Indian Musical Instruments Nagada

Special Cover – Indian Musical Instruments Nagada

Indian kettle drums are called Nagada, Nagadda, Nagara, and Nagarra. These drums have a bowl-shaped body and natural hide heads secured with all-over leather webbing. The nagada itself has a rich history. It has been played in northern India for centuries to prepare warriors for battles. Adapted over the years as a source of entertainment, nagadas once were used to send messages of joy and emergency. Today Nagada parties are common, providing entertainment for villagers and visitors alike by a typically all-male troupe. Nagada parties include the fast beats of the nagada, accompanied by spirited singing from troupe members and dancing by younger members of the group.

Special Cover – Indian Musical Instruments Mridanga

Said to be an incarnation of Krishna’s brother Lord Balarama Himself, the Mridanga is a powerful instrument, which helps to carry devotees into blissful ecstasy while they chant the holy names of Krishna. In Kirtan, with thousands of people or just one or two, the Mridanga raises the consciousness and allows one and all to focus more fully on Krishna.

The drum is played with palms and fingers of both hands. The khol is a drum with a clay body, with drum-heads at both ends, one far smaller than the other.

Special Cover – Indian Musical Instruments Veena

Special Cover – Indian Musical Instruments Veena

The Sarasvati Veena is an Indian plucked string instrument. It is named after the Hindu goddess Saraswati, who is usually depicted holding or playing the instrument..Bharata, in his Natya Shastra, explains the theory of the 22 sruti-s in an octave with the help of two experimental veena-s.

The veena then went through several innovations and modifications. In its current form, the instrument can be attributed to Raghunath Nayak ( circa 17th century ) of Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu.

The veena is 1.5m long and is made from jackwood. It has a large, round body with a thick, wide neck, the end of which is carved into the head of a dragon. A small resonator is attached to the underside of the neck. The veena has 24 metal frets embedded in hardened bees-wax, mixed with charcoal powder.

The veena is a complete instrument and provides the basic components: sruti, laya and sahitya. Its main attraction is the mellow tonal quality which is capable of evoking a meditative atmosphere.
