Permanent Pictorial Cancellation – (4) – Rameswaram – Pamban Bridge – Tamilnadu

Permanent Pictorial Cancellation –  (4) – Rameswaram – Pamban Bridge – Tamilnadu

The temple and the island of Rameswaram have acquired this name because, Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva, the God of Gods here on return from Sri Lanka. According to legend, after killing Ravana Lord Rama returned with his consort Goddess Seetha to India first stepping on the shores of Rameswaram. To expiate the “dosha” of killing a brahmin, Lord Rama wanted to offer worship to Lord Shiva. Since there was no shrine in the island had despatched Sri Hauman to Kailash to bring an idol of Lord Shiva.

Rameswaram, is a town in the Ramanathapuram district. It is located on Pamban Island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel and is about 50 kilometres from Mannar Island, Sri Lanka. It is situated in the Gulf of Mannar, at the very tip of the Indian peninsula. Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, is connected to mainland India by the Pamban Bridge.

Pamban Bridge is one type of cantilever bridge connects Rameswaram of Pamban Island to Tamil Nadu, India. It was first Sea Bridge and the second longest sea bridge in India (after Bandra Worli Sea Link). The bridge is located at the world’s second “highly corrosive environment” and cyclone-prone high wind velocity zone.

Comet Line  Special Covers 1942-2012– Royal Air Forces Escaping Society – Luxembourg  Connection

The Comet line (Le Réseau Comète) was a World War II resistance group in Belgium/France which helped Allied soldiers and airmen return to Britain. The line started in Brussels where the men were fed, clothed and given false identity papers before being hidden in attics and cellars of houses. Some 800 stranded and shot-down Allied servicemen were spirited out of Nazi-occupied Europe. Most of those carried along the line were AIRMEN.   A network of people guided them south through occupied France into neutral Spain and home via British-controlled Gibraltar.The Comet line was created by a young Belgian woman Andree de Jongh (nickname “Dedee”) who was 20 Years old in 1940.
