Special Cover – Royal Darbar of Srikanatadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar at Amba Vilas (Mysore Palace) 1953-2013 – By India Post

The special cover depicts Srikanatadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar ascending the golden throne of Mysore in traditional attire amidst the ancient practice of announcing the arrival of the king to the court. After ascending the throne, the king used to receive tributes from the courtiers and other members of the royal family at the private durbar, marking the symbolic and ceremonial beginning of the Dasara festivities. This year however, this darbar was held in a symbolic manner by keeping the Royal sword on the throne as the royal family is in mourning.

The cover was released by Her Highness Shrimathi Pramoda Devi Wadiyar at Posta Training Center, Nazarbad, Mysore on 24th September on the occasion of Chamundipex 2014. Sri M.S.Ramanujam, Chief Postmaster General. Karnataka Circle, Bangalore presided over the function.

The cover presented here bears the autograph of Her Highness Shrimathi Pramoda Devi Wadiyar.

It depicts Wadiyar ascending the golden throne in traditional attire amid the ancient practice of announcing the arrival of the king to the court.

It may be mentioned here that the late Wadiyar, who passed away in December 2013, used to symbolically ascend the golden throne estimated to be more than 4,000 years old and weighing around 450 kg, as part of the private durbar held at the Amba Vilas Palace. He used to receive tributes from courtiers and other members of the royal family during the private durbar, which marks the ceremonial beginning of the Dasara celebrations at the palace.

This year, however, the royal sword will be placed on the throne.

By bringing out the special cover, Wadiyar has become culturally intertwined with contemporary Indian history, said Chief Postmaster General, Karnataka circle, M.S. Ramanujam.

“This tradition was inherited from the Vijayanagar kings — it was adopted by Raja Wadiyar, who ascended the throne in 1610.

The tradition continues to this day, lending a royal touch to make the Mysore Dasara more alluring,” the Department of Posts said in a press release.

The special cover on the royal durbar was sponsored by Shivanna S., former government pleader, Mysore district, who is also the Zonal Chairperson of Dist 317A of Lions Club International.
