Karnataka Forest Department

The Kanda Garuda & Dodda Daasa Mangatti, both meaning “King of the forest” in Kannada. Hornbill is the most apt mascot for the Foresters Sports Meet because the hornbills are not only the friends of forests but also are true silviculturist. They help in seed dispersal of more than 20 odd tree species. They also assist in seed scarification and seed germination. A healthy population of Hornbills is an indication of the health of the forests

They display extra-ordinary stunts in the sky during aerial casque butting, with birds striking each other in flight. They also live in groups and are loyal couple and very good parents.

The Great Indian Hornbill (Buceros bicornis) – also known as Great Pied Hornbill – is one of the largest member of the hornbill family. It is endemic to the forests of the Indian subcontinent, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Indonesia, with a life span of around 35 years and may go upto 50 years in captivity.

The most eye-catching feature of the hornbill is its bright yellow and black casque on top of its large bill.
