SOUTH CAROLINA – The Common Scoter

Issue no 19  Dt of Issue 23 May 1983.

Along the coast of South Carolina , the Common Scoters spend their winter. They are handsome ducks who hold their head high as they paddle about in the coves and inlets of the coast. The male Duck bears the distinction of being the only completely black duck in North America. Atop the male’s nose sets a yellow-orange knob which is perhaps the bird’s most distinctive feature and which it its nickname –butter-bill or butter-nose.
