J&K circle of India Post organized a philatelic exhibition at Leh in the month of September, 2011 and released 5 special covers on various themes about life, heritage and culture of this region.

Special Cover:- Shanti Stupa-The Shanti Stupa is an impressive white-domed structure in Changspa that is beautifully illuminated at night. It was built by a Japanese Buddhist organization to commemorate 2500 years of Buddhism and to promote World Peace.

The Shanti Stupa was inaugurated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1985. The views of the sunset and sunrise from the Shanti Stupa are spectacular. The stupa has become a tourist attraction not only due to its religious significance but also due to its location which provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Date of Issue:-01.09.2011.

Special Cove:- Likir Monastery-The Likkir Monastery of Leh Ladakh was founded in the later half of the 11th century, around the year 1605. It belongs to the Yellow Hat Sect, founded by Tsongkhapa. It consists of a number of shrines inside its complex. Presently, it serves as the residence of approximately 120 Buddhist monks. The monastery also has a school, in which almost thirty students study. In the 15th century, Likir Gompa came under the influence of Lodos Sangphu. A disciple of Khasdubje, he made efforts to see that the monastery flourished and prospered.

The name Likir means “The Naga – Encircled”. The reason behind this naming of Likir Gompa of Ladakh is that it stands surrounded by the bodies of the two great serpent spirits, the Naga-rajas, Nanda and Taksako. The monastery is situated at a distance of approximately 62 km to the west of Leh town. Lhachen Gyalpo, the fifth king of Ladakh, offered the site where the monastery now stands, to Lama Duwang Chosje. The Lama, a great champion of meditation, blessed the site offered to him, after which the construction on the monastery was undertaken.

Special Cover:- Pangong Lake-This famous blue brackish Lake of Pangong is 5/6 Kms wid and over 144 Kms long with half of its running the other side of the “INDO CHINA BORDER”.Pangong Tso or lake is an endorheic lake in the Himalayas situated at a height of about 4,350 m (14,270 ft). It is 134 km (83 mi) long and extends from India to Tibet. 60% of the length of the lake lies in China. The lake is 5 km (3.1 mi) wide at its broadest point. During winter the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water.

Special Cover:- Double Hump Camel-these camels are not the average desert camels, but a double-humped kind, which are shorter and stouter. Their humps are plump and pliable and collapse in winter when food is scarce. They are the double-humped Bactrian camels.

Double Humped Bactrian Camels offer the most enchanting ride in Nubra Valley . These double humped camels were earlier used by traders as pack animals to load spices, fruits, clothes, etc. For the last 50 years, they have been bred from the tourism point of view. They can carry two to three adults at a time and can travel for miles. In the past few years, these camels have emerged as the hot favorites among tourists for camel safaris . A double-humped camel ride is quite popular at Deskit and Hunder . One can enjoy the scenic beauty of the Ladakh valleys, villages, especially the Panamic village, and the colorful Buddhist monasteries or Gompas. A double-humped camel ride is popular in Ladakh and is considered one of the best camel safaris throughout the world.
