1.Special Cover – Ganjifa , handmade and hand Painted playing Cards – By India Post

Ganjifa is a term commonly used for hand-made and hand-painted traditional playing cards prevalent in India since medieval times. The art and games of these cards gained popularity in India during the 16 th century and especially under the rule of Mughal emperor Akbar.

Ganjifa cards are of historical importance besides holding aesthetic and artistic value. They serve a social purpose by bringing people together, providing entertainment and by popularising socio-cultural themes. The cards are also used as souvenirs.

2. Special Cover – Bharat Ratna Maharshi Karve’s Zopadi– By India Post

Maharshi Karve’s was a prominent social reformer of his time in India in the field of welfare of womankind. Maharshi Karve was one of the pioneers in India in breaking with extraordinary fortitude and perseverance the above harsh social mores against womankind. He promoted education of women and freedom for widows to remarry if they wished to do so. The Government of India recognized his reform work by awarding him Padma Vibhushan in 1955 and highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna in 1958.

1.Special Cover –Big Foot, Loutulim, Goa – By India Post

This museum is situated in the small village of Loutolimwhich is about 25 km from Panaji. The musuem is also known as big foot. It is privately run by an artist called Maendra Jocelino Araujo Alvares. The open-air museum recreates Goan rural life as it was a hundred years ago.

The main highlight however at Ancestral Goa is the giant 14 meter sculpture of Sant Mirabai carved in 30 days by MJA Alavres the enterprising artist cum museum owner. This has been cited in the Limca book of records for being the longest laterite sculpture in India

2. Special Cover – Baba Amte – By India Post

Baba Amte formed Anandvan (Forest of Joy), to serve the people struck by leprosy. He received many awards including the Ramon Magsaysay Award.  Baba Amte, was born on 26 December, 1914 in Hinganghat, Wardha district in Maharashtra. He was the eldest son of his parents. His father was a wealthy Brahmin landowner of Wardha district, who owned over 450 acres of good cultivable land. The name ‘Baba’ was affectionately given by his parents. At a very young age, Baba Amte owned a gun and used to hunt wild boar and deer. Later, he went on to own an expensive sports car, cushioned with panther skin.

Lavani Dance  is a genre of music popular in Maharashtra. Lavani is a combination of traditional song and dance, which particularly performed to the beats of Dholak, a percussion instrument. Lavani is noted for its powerful rhythm and erotic sentiment. Lavani has contributed substantially to the development of Marathi folk theatre. In Maharashtra and southern Madhya Pradesh, it is performed by the female performers wearing nine-yard longsaris. The songs are sung in a quick tempo.

2. Special Cover –Vasudeo – By India Post

Maharashtra has a lively tradition of song, dance, music and theatre. Vasudev, adance form, is performed by people believed to be  incarnation of Lord Krishna. Bedecked in the distinctive headgear of peacock feathers, performers sing Vasudev geets and with nimble, delicate dance steps, whirl around presenting anecdotes from Lord Krishna’s life in exchange for alms. Soothing, melodious notes float through the villages, particularly near Jalgaon and Dhule. On auspicious occasions like the birth of a child, dancersmight hold night- long performances called gondhals. Elsewhere, rustic actors could be narrating lively stories through the bharud, an enactment of the written musical compositions of poet- saints, and singers could be crooning powadas, inspiring ballads.

The legendary cartoonist Rasipuram Krishnaswamy Laxman(R.K.Laxman) is best known for his creation The Common Man. Born on 23 October 1924, R.K. Laxman is widely regarded as India’s greatest-ever cartoonist. His father was a teacher at a local school and he had seven other siblings. Laxman was inspired by the cartoons, which appeared in renowned magazines like Punch. He started drawing whatever caught his attention and graduated from the University of Mysore. He started his career with magazines like Swarajya and Blitz. His elder brother R.K.Narayan was a famous English novelist. He illustrated his elder brother R K Narayan’s stories in The Hindu. He started off as a political cartoonist for the Free Press Journal, before joining The Times of India, with which he has been associated for over fifty years. His cartoon strip “You Said It”, which features The Common Man, has attained cult status.
