Lions Club of Calcutta (Tollygunge) [the Club] organized the Opening Ceremony of its Golden Jubilee Celebrations on Wednesday, 21^st December, 2011 at Lions Children Park, Deshpriya Park, Kolkata at 9.00am on its 50^th Foundation Day to commemorate 50 glorious years of Service to Humanity. The Club is celebrating year 2011-12 (starting from 21^st December, 2011 to 20^th December, 2012) as its Golden Jubilee Year.

Chief Guest, Shri S K Chakrabart – Chief Postmaster General,  Guest of Honour, Lion Mahendra Jain – District Governor 322B2, Lion Santosh Jain, Golden Jubilee Chairman, Lion B D Surana, Convenor of Opening Ceremony Function, many Past Presidents & members of the Club, dignitaries from District 322B2 including Lion Anoop Varma – VDG, Lion Ashok Gupta – VDG, postal department officials and doctors were present on this joyous occasion. In this golden jubilee year, the Club is planning to organize many mega service activities to serve the needs of underprivileged persons and fellowship activities.

On this momentous occasion:

• A Commemorative Special Cover (Designed by Lion B. D. Surana) of the Club was released by Shri S. K. Chakrabarti, Chief Postmaster General, West Bengal Circle, Government of India and he presented first copy of the Special Cover to Lion B D Surana.
• A Golden Jubilee Lapel Pin of the Club was released by Lion Mahendra Jain, District Governor, Lions District 322B2 and was presented to Lion Santosh Jain.
• The Club announced adoption of one Orphanage for a period of one year and
• 8 (Eight) Tri-Cycles to physically Challanged persons were distributed by the Club.

Lion Santosh Jain, Lion Mahendra Jain, Lion Anoop Varma, Lion Ashok Gupta, Shri S K Chakrabarti addressed the lions’ gathering. Lion Manoj Banthia acted as Master of Ceremony of the function and Vote of thanks was given by Lion Ranjeet Kanodia, Secretary.

Lion B D Surana, who designed the commemorative special cover, in his address spoke about special cover, its philatelic importance and gave information about various aspects of the commemorative special cover.

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization, with 13.50 lacs members, more than 46,200 clubs and having presence in more than 206 countries & geographic areas. In India, the Lions Movement Started in Mumbai, in 1956. There are more than 2 Lakhs Members now in India. In Kolkata, the Lions Movement started in 1957.

Lions Club of Calcutta (Tollygunge) was established on 21^st December, 1961 and is one of the oldest & biggest clubs in Multiple District 322.The Club has Four Permanent Projects wherein it provides medical facilities like Homeopathy, Eye & Dental Clinics to underprivileged persons. The Club’s Medical services include Blood Donation Camps, Health Check-up camps, Eye Screening Camps, Distribution of Spectacles,. Club’s other services include providing educational assistance like distribution of textbooks & stationary, installation of tubewells, distribution of tricycles/artificial limbs and blankets, Tree plantations and relief donations.

The show was graced mainly by the highly acknowledged thematic exhibits of National and International stature  belonging to Mr. Atul Jain and Sri Naresh Agrawal  on “Human Hands” and “Automobiles” respectively which won various national and international awards in the recent times. There were other very good displays mainly the one “Gandh-a life journey” by Sri Abhijit Biswas alongwith others on different topics such as  “Queen’s Baton Relay-2010”,Dak Ticket Sandharbh Jain Dharam, Maximum Cards(environment), History and development of car, Road Traffic Safety, Labeling Airmails etc. Numismatic section had displays of Coins from 500Bc to 1947 AD  by Sri Neeraj Agrawal, Coins of republic of India by Sri Alok Chowdhary and  Sri Pramod , Wild life on Indian coins and currency by Sri Maurya were   worth seen and  remained crowded all the time.

Though bad weather interrupted the flow of visitors twice in between but surprisingly the enthusiasm was never reduced.  The people kept on visiting even during the rain showers.

Visitors comments on the visitor book showed that the love for philately and coins is there in every one but it just needed opportunity and a platform to show it. Loins club of Bilaspur very generously requested the association to conduct such shows every year and assured of full support.

Speaking on the dias , the president Sri C.R. Andhare and General secretary Sri Atul Jain thanked the Loins Club, the people who visited the show, the people who showed interest in becoming member of the society. They spoke on the aim and importance of such activities . Loins club Bilaspur  awarded certificate of appreciation to all participants and honored the veteran philatelists for their achievements and services given in this field. The success of the show  was an example of team work with  special efforts from Sri Thakur, Ahishek Sharma and Abhijit Biswas under guidance of Sri C.R.andhare.

A Special cover was released on 12 Jan 1980at Calcutta  by Dist 322 B of Lions Club  International to mark the Birth Centenary Of Lion Melvin Jones Founder of Lions Club International. The Cover carries a Picture Of Lion M Jones and cancellation shows Lions International Emblem.

A Special cover was released on 01 Feb 1976  during LIONPEX 76  at Calcutta  to coincide with 20 Years of Lions in India  . The Cover shows  Lions International Enblem and Key . Lionpex was conducted by Dist 332 B of Lions Club.

A Special cover was released on 25 Apr 1975 during LIONPEX 75  at Calcutta  Dist 322B . The Cancellation shows Lions International Emblem.
