Stamps of India – King George Medical College/CSM, Lucknow – By India Post

The medical college was formally opened in October 1911, the year when His Majesty King George V and Queen Mary visited India, by the then Lt. Governor of United Provinces – Sir John Prescott Hewett. Every year since 1916, the ‘topper’ of the Final Professional Examination is decorated with the ‘Hewett Medal’ in honor of the man who opened the portals of the college to ‘Georgians’. Dr. K. S. Nigam was the first Hewett medallist of this college. Col. W. Selby was the first Principal and Professor of Surgery and Lt. Col. C. A. Sprawson was the first physician. To start with the total faculty consisted of 5 professors and 2 lecturers. On the advice of the General Medical Council of Great Britain, a framework of admissions and courses of study was organised. Initially, the college was affiliated to the Allahabad University.

A major milestone in the history of this institution is it’s conversion and upgradation as the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University. This came about by an act passed on the 16th September 2002 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh under Chief Minister Sushree Mayawati. This is the only medical university in the north and one of 3 such universities in the country.

Indian Stamps – The Smile Train – Cleft Surgery – By India Post

A cleft is a birth defect and often the No.1 birth defect in most developing countries – nutrition is one of the leading factors and lack of folic acid. Babies are born with clefts everywhere in the world including the U.S. But you seldom see clefts in the U.S. and Europe because they are repaired automatically soon after birth. Clefts are usually NOT repaired in developing countries because most of the families are too poor to afford surgery and the government will not provide free surgery. A gap in the upper lip is called a cleft. Any birth defect is tragic and painful. A cleft results in extreme facial deformity. The child is unable to eat or speak properly. However this is one of the few birth defects that can be easily corrected by surgical repair that could take as little as 45 minutes.

The smile train is a global charity organization reaching out to millions of children suffering from cleft defects and deformities. The Smile Train began in 1999, with one surgery in China performed by a local medical team, and has since grown into the largest cleft organization in the world.

Stamps Of India – Indian Council Of Medical Research – By India Post

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi, the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research, is one of the oldest medical research bodies in the world.

As early as in 1911, the Government of India set up the Indian Research Fund Association (IRFA) with the specific objective of sponsoring and coordinating medical research in the country. After independence, several important changes were made in the organisation and the activities of the IRFA. It was redesignated in 1949 as the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) with considerably expanded scope of functions.

The Council’s research priorities coincide with the National health priorities such as control and management of communicable diseases, fertility control, maternal and child health, control of nutritional disorders, developing alternative strategies for health care delivery, containment within safety limits of environmental and occupational health problems; research on major non-communicable diseases like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, blindness, diabetes and other metabolic and haematological disorders; mental health research and drug research (including traditional remedies). All these efforts are undertaken with a view to reduce the total burden of disease and to promote health and well-being of the population.

The Association had its beginning in the Association of Nursing Superintendents which was founded in 1905, at Lucknow. The organisation was composed of nine European Nurses holding administrative posts in hospitals.

Like their counterparts in other countries, this small band of women was imbued with vision and a pioneering spirit. They saw the need to develop Nursing as a profession and also to provide a forum where professional Nurses could meet and plan to achieve these ends.

The Association of Nursing Superintendents, therefore, sought the help and co-operation of Nurses throughout the country. At the Annual Conference held in Bombay in 1908, a decision was taken to establish Trained Nurses Association. The Association was inaugurated in 1909. The two organisations shared the same officers until 1910 when, at the first Trained Nurses Association (TNA) Conference, held at Banaras (UP), the TNA members elected their own officers.

In 1922, the Association of Nursing Superintendents and Trained Nurses Association were amalgamated and called The Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI).

In 1912 the TNAI got affiliated with the International Council of Nurses (ICN). The TNAI along with various responsibilities as a member had participated in the ICN Nursing Abroad Programme since 1950. Under this scheme a number of TNAI members had been placed in institutions abroad to obtain clinical experience on an “earn and learn” basis. In 1974 the TNAI became a member of the Commonwealth Nurses Federation (CNF).
