My Stamp released with Karni Mata, Deshnok – Rajpex 2012

Design – 8/16

During Rajpex 2012, 16 designs of Rajasthan important places were introduced.

The Karni Mata temple near Bikaner, is dedicated to an early fifteenth century mystic who was considered to be a reincarnation of goddess Durga. The uniqueness of the temple is that it is inhabited by legions of brown rats which scurry around the complex without any fear. The rats are believed to be repositories of the souls of dead charans, the traditional bards.

The Karni Mata Temple is an important Hindu site. It is a beautiful temple made of marble with solid silver doors. However, it is not the architecture of this temple that attracts tourists; it is the thousands of rats that inhabit it. There are special holes and tunnels around the temple to facilitate the rats’ movements as well as a wire screen over the courtyard to protect them from birds of prey. Pilgrims are anointed with ash while the scurrying critters run over their feet. This is considered very auspicious as is spotting a rare white rat. Bowls of milk and water are strategically placed throughout the temple and pilgrims feed the rats balls of sugar.

Design – 6/16

During Rajpex 2012, 16 designs of Rajasthan important places were introduced.

Situated in the village of Chandanpur, on the bank of the Gambhir river, Sri Mahavirji attracts thousands of devotees every year. People come, from across India- and even abroad- to worship, to offer prayers and to seek blessings. The legend behind the construction of this temple is rather quaint; it is believed that a local milkman observed that his cow, after a long day’s grazing, would return in the evening with her udders empty. Obviously puzzled, the man followed the cow, and discovered that the creature would stand atop a nearby hillock and allow all her milk to flow away on it. A little bit of digging by the milkman revealed an idol of Mahavirji buried in the hillock. A temple was built to mark the spot and it is still, centuries later, an important center of pilgrimage for devout Jains. The temple, which is dedicated to the 24th Tirthankar, Sri Digamber Jain Mahavirji, is made from white marble and red sandstone. It consists of a large complex of small temples, the main temple being decorated with a series of pillared niches containing idols of the Jain saints. Within the complex is a towering 32 ft high statue of the saint Shantinath.

Srinivasa Ramanujan was a mathematician par excellence. He is widely believed to be the greatest mathematician of the 20th Century. Srinivasa Ramanujan made significant contribution to the analytical theory of numbers and worked on elliptic functions, continued fractions, and infinite series.

Srinivasa Aiyangar Ramanujan was born on December 22, 1887 in Erode, Tamil Nadu. His father worked in Kumbakonam as a clerk in a cloth merchant’s shop. At the of five Ramanujan went to primary school in Kumbakonam. In 1898 at age 10, he entered the Town High School in Kumbakonam. At the age of eleven he was lent books on advanced trigonometry written by S. L. Loney by two lodgers at his home who studied at the Government college. He mastered them by the age of thirteen. Ramanujan was a bright student, winning academic prizes in high school.

At age of 16 his life took a decisive turn after he obtained a book titled” A Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure and Applied Mathematics”. The book was simply a compilation of thousands of mathematical results, most set down with little or no indication of proof.
