During Jammu Stamp Show-2011, 25 designs of Buddhist Heritage Sites in J&K were introduced.

Shanti Stupa of Ladakh is located on the hilltop at Changspa. It can be reached quite easily from the Fort Road. The Stupa was constructed by a Japanese Buddhist organization, known as ‘The Japanese for World Peace’. The aim behind the construction of the stupa was to commemorate 2500 years of Buddhism and to promote World Peace. His Holiness, the Dalai Lama inaugurated the Shanti Stupa in the year 1985.

A magnificent white-domed structure, the Shanti Stupa of Leh Ladakh offers spectacular views of the sunrise and sunset.

The Rangdum Monastery of Ladakh was founded in the 18th century. Situated in the Zanskar region of Ladakh, it serves as the residence of approximately 40 monks. The monastery rises over a centrally ascending mound, entrenched around by the bifurcated route of a mountain stream. The Rangdum Gompa of Ladakh gives the appearance of an age-old fortification, which is standing as the protector of a mystical mountain valley.

One of the major attractions of the monastery is its small museum. It boasts of a rich collection of fascinating Tibetan as well as other relics.

The highly revered monastery is 300 years old. The Tsomoriri Lake in front of it is also held in reverence, and considered equally sacred by the local people.
Design – 18/25

During Jammu Stamp Show-2011, 25 designs of Buddhist Heritage Sites in J&K were introduced.

The Diskit Gompa of Leh Ladakh dates back to the 14th century and owes its inception to Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsong-kha-pa. At the heart of Diskit Monastery is an elevated cupola, which stands adorned with a beautiful fresco that illustrates the Tashilhunpo Gompa of Tibet. There are a number of shrines inside the monastery’s complex, like Kangyu-lang, Tsangyu-lang, etc. Also, hundreds of Mongolian and Tibetan texts have found their storehouse inside these temples.

Diskit Gompa has quite an interesting legend attached to it. It is believed that a Mongol demon once lived here and was considered to be a sworn enemy of Buddhism. He was annihilated near the monastery. However, even after his death, his body kept coming back to the monastery again and again. It is said that even today the wrinkled head and hand of the demon lie inside a temple of the monastery, which is filled with fierce Gods and Goddesses.

The Kushanas, who originally hailed from China, conquered the flourishing city of Taxila including the whole of the Gandhar region in the later period of the 4th century BCE and continued with their regime till 230 BCE. The Kushanas were liberal enough to encourage the Indian art along with the state religion Buddhism. In the ‘golden age’ of Taxila, Kushanas not only supported Buddhism but also built numerous temples and monasteries in and around Taxila. Unfortunately, the invasion of the Sassanian rulers on Gandhara though ended the Kushana’s rule in 230 BCE, but the later also protected Buddhism alike their predecessor till the invasion of the White Huns on Taxila in the 5th century CE, who plundered the city and destroyed the monasteries, temples and viharas of Taxila.

Design – 14/25

During Jammu Stamp Show-2011, 25 designs of Buddhist Heritage Sites in J&K were introduced.

The name Likir means “The Naga – Encircled”. The reason behind this naming of Likir Gompa of Ladakh is that it stands surrounded by the bodies of the two great serpent spirits, the Naga-rajas, Nanda and Taksako. The monastery is situated at a distance of approximately 62 km to the west of Leh town. Lhachen Gyalpo, the fifth king of Ladakh, offered the site where the monastery now stands, to Lama Duwang Chosje. The Lama, a great champion of meditation, blessed the site offered to him, after which the construction on the monastery was undertaken.

The Likkir Monastery of Leh Ladakh was founded in the later half of the 11th century, around the year 1605. It belongs to the Yellow Hat Sect, founded by Tsongkhapa. It consists of a number of shrines inside its complex. Presently, it serves as the residence of approximately 120 Buddhist monks. The monastery also has a school, in which almost thirty students study. In the 15th century, Likir Gompa came under the influence of Lodos Sangphu. A disciple of Khasdubje, he made efforts to see that the monastery flourished and prospered.

Matho Monastery, with the history of five hundred years and the only monastery under the Saskya monastic Establishment in Leh, is located 26 km from the city on the beautiful Indus River valley. Believed to be established by Lama Dugpa Dorje, a famous Lama in Buddhist Monarchy, the monastery houses worthy marvelous collection of ancient thankas, especially some in the form of mandalas. The significance of this monastery lies in it being the only one that belongs to the Sakya order of Tibetan Buddhism in Ladakh. Also, the monastery is centred on the Saskya monastery of Tibet. Presently, the gompa houses nearly 60 lamas and 30 novices from the larger gompas in Ladakh.
