Iran issued a set of Five Beautiful stamps in 1999  on 20th Century’s last Total solar Eclipse.

The telescope at Rangapur has been used for photoelectric observations of binary stars, peculiar stars, pulsating stars, star clusters and also for the spectroscopic study of binary stars and peculiar stars.  The telescope is also used for obtaining scientific information on comets, planetary atmospheres and near Earth Asteroids.  The department obtained two 12-inch telescopes from the UGC-SAP funds.  These telescopes are being used by the students for their practicals and in their research projects.  In addition, a 10 feet radio telescope operating at 10GHZ was installed at Japal-Rangapur Observatory in  1980 for conducting research on the Sun.

Major Yuri Gagrin was a Soviet cosmonaut and his visit to India a special cover. On 12th April 1961, he became the first human in outer space and the first to orbit the Earth. He received medals from around the world for his pioneering tour in space in the Vostok 1 space craft.

A Permanent Pictorial Cancellation on Sriharikota Range, Andhra Pradesh was Inaugurated on 20 April 1976. An inaugural Cover with the Pictorial Cancellation at Sriharikota (Pin  524124) is shown . The Illustration on cover shows “ARYABHATA” – India’s First Sattelite. This is Seventh out of 10 Pictorial Cancellations available in Andhra Pradesh.

A Mint and a First Day Cancelled 55c Pre Stamped Envelope from Australia released to commemorate International Year Of Astronomy. it marks the 400th Anniversary of Italian Scientist Galileo Galilei  turning a telescope to sky.

Gibraltar released a set of Four stamps to mark this event.

The Europa 2009 ‘Year of Astronomy’ Gibraltar stamp issue marks the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei and pays tribute to Aristotle, Galileo, Copernicus and Newton. The aim of the Year is to stimulate worldwide interest, especially among young people, in astronomy and science.

Astronomy is this year’s Europa theme, also year 2009 is clebrated as International Year of Astronomy.
