Lions Club of Calcutta (Tollygunge) [the Club] organized the Opening Ceremony of its Golden Jubilee Celebrations on Wednesday, 21st December, 2011 at Lions Children Park, Deshpriya Park, Kolkata at 9.00am on its 50th Foundation Day to commemorate 50 glorious years of Service to Humanity. The Club is celebrating year 2011-12 (starting from 21st December, 2011 to 20th December, 2012) as its Golden Jubilee Year.
Chief Guest, Shri S K Chakrabart – Chief Postmaster General, Guest of Honour, Lion Mahendra Jain – District Governor 322B2, Lion Santosh Jain, Golden Jubilee Chairman, Lion B D Surana, Convenor of Opening Ceremony Function, many Past Presidents & members of the Club, dignitaries from District 322B2 including Lion Anoop Varma – VDG, Lion Ashok Gupta – VDG, postal department officials and doctors were present on this joyous occasion. In this golden jubilee year, the Club is planning to organize many mega service activities to serve the needs of underprivileged persons and fellowship activities.
On this momentous occasion:
- A Commemorative Special Cover (Designed by Lion B. D. Surana) of the Club was released by Shri S. K. Chakrabarti, Chief Postmaster General, West Bengal Circle, Government of India and he presented first copy of the Special Cover to Lion B D Surana.
- A Golden Jubilee Lapel Pin of the Club was released by Lion Mahendra Jain, District Governor, Lions District 322B2 and was presented to Lion Santosh Jain.
- The Club announced adoption of one Orphanage for a period of one year and
- 8 (Eight) Tri-Cycles to physically Challanged persons were distributed by the Club.
Lion Santosh Jain, Lion Mahendra Jain, Lion Anoop Varma, Lion Ashok Gupta, Shri S K Chakrabarti addressed the lions’ gathering. Lion Manoj Banthia acted as Master of Ceremony of the function and Vote of thanks was given by Lion Ranjeet Kanodia, Secretary.
Lion B D Surana, who designed the commemorative special cover, in his address spoke about special cover, its philatelic importance and gave information about various aspects of the commemorative special cover.

In India, the Lions Movement Started in Mumbai, in 1956. There are more than 2 Lakhs Members now in India. In Kolkata, the Lions Movement started in 1957.
Lions Club of Calcutta (Tollygunge) was established on 21st December, 1961 and is one of the oldest & biggest clubs in Multiple District 322.The Club has Four Permanent Projects wherein it provides medical facilities like Homeopathy, Eye & Dental Clinics to underprivileged persons. The Club’s Medical services include Blood Donation Camps, Health Check-up camps, Eye Screening Camps, Distribution of Spectacles,. Club’s other services include providing educational assistance like distribution of textbooks & stationary, installation of tubewells, distribution of tricycles/artificial limbs and blankets, Tree plantations and relief donations.
