Special Cover – Dr M R Guruswamy Mudaliar
A Special cover was released by Tamil Nadu Governor Shri Surjit Singh Barnala on 20 April 2009 at Chennai in honour of Dr M R Guruswamy Mudaliar who was first Indian Dean of Madras Medical College.
CHENNAI: “If the country is on the threshold of becoming a developed nation it is because of the strong foundation laid by our forefathers. It is our bounden duty to recall and show our gratitude and respects to those who had contributed their mite for the building of the nation,” said Governor Surjit Singh Barnala here on Monday.
Releasing a special cover in honour of Dr. M.R. Guruswami Mudaliar here, Mr.Barnala said release of postal covers, naming of roads and erection of statues were not only to honour the remarkable services of eminent personalities but also to carry on their messages and their life history to the younger generation so that the youth could emulate them.
It was a fitting and deserving tribute to Dr.Guruswami to release a cover in his honour. He said Dr. Guruswami’s service in the field of medicine, his intuitive diagnostic skills, recognition by the British and introduction of Special Chair of Therapeutics bear testimony for his remarkable and distinguished service to the people.
The Governor said he was happy that Dr.Guruswami’s son was continuing the philanthropic activities of his father through TTV Group of schools. Earlier M.S.Ramanujan, Post-Master General, Chennai City Region, handed over the special cover to the Governor.
Guruswami Viswanathan, president of the TTV Schools Committee, in his welcome address, said Dr.Guruswami started a chain of schools as he thought that education alone would uplift the downtrodden.
