World Heritage Status to 104-year-old Shimla-Kalka rail track by the UNESCO,
The release of this special Cover commemorates dedication of Kalka-Shimla Hill railway as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The Kalka -Shimla Railway represents an exceptional technical achievement in the development of the Himalayan Mountain Railways because of its length, altitude and the difficult terrain through which it runs in difficult tropical climatic conditions.It Covers a distance of 96 kms through 102 tunnels and 869 bridges and was commissioned on 9th November,1903. This the Fourth railway line in India to get this status. The journey starts from Kalka at 656 metres and finishes at Shimla at an altitude of 2076 metres above the sea level.
